So you want to run for office...
Eligibility Requirements

You must be at least 18 years of age and a registered voter living within the corporate limits of the City of Fortuna to be eligible for office (Elections Code 201).

You may not hold elected office if you have been convicted of designated crimes specified in the Constitution and laws of the State (Govt. Code 1021).

You may not make any reference to party affiliation on required forms, since the City Council is a nonpartisan body (Elections Code 8002).

Nomination Period

Nomination period runs from July 18, 2016 to August 12, 2016. If an incumbent does not run for re-election the filing period will extended to 5:00 pm August 17, 2016

There are a number of other forms to fill out and return, some of which are required by the Fair Political Practices Commission, and others requested by the County Registrar of Voters and/or the City Clerk’s Office.

Please call (707) 725-1411 to make an appointment and allow at least 30 minutes for the City Clerk to review the documents with you when you pick up your nomination packet. Appointments are strongly encouraged. 
There is no filing fee to run for office.  However, there is a fee if you wish to have a Candidate’s Statement printed in the Voter’s Pamphlet.  Both the statement and the estimated fee of $350.00 are due when nomination papers are filed. 

Filing Nomination Papers
The deadline for Nomination papers is Wednesday, August 12, at 5:00 p.m. If at all possible, file a day or two before the deadline, so there is time to collect additional signatures if necessary.

Please allow at least 30 minutes for the filing process.
Appointments are strongly recommended. Filers without an appointment will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis after those with an appointment.

The following documents MUST be filed together, by 5:00 p.m. on or before August 12, 2016:

1. The Nomination Paper (required) 

2. Form 700 (Statement of Economic Interest). (required) 

3. A Candidate’s Statement of Qualifications (optional) and payment in the amount of $350*

*This is an estimate of your pro rata share of the cost of the Candidate’s statement. You will be billed for the balance if the actual cost is more, and you will be refunded the difference if the actual cost is less.

4. Ballot Designation Worksheet (required)

5. Code of Fair Campaign practices (optional)

6. Nomination Paper Checklist (required)

7. Candidate Information for Public review (required)

8. Permission to Post Candidate Home Information to the Web (required)

Once you have filed the nomination paper and candidate’s statement, they cannot be altered. However, you have until the end of the filing period to withdraw them entirely, thereby removing your name from the ballot.

All documents filed by a candidate are public information.

The Nomination Papers and the Candidate Statement will remain confidential until the end of the filing period. At the end of the filing period they are open to public review but may not be copied.

All documents filed to run for office will be posted on the City Website.
