"Conversations at the Depot"
The “Conversations at the Depot” series was inaugurated with the goal to tell and preserve Fortuna’s oral history. The members of the Fortuna Historical Commission invite the public to the Depot Museum to explore and share our local history through these lively and fascinating “conversations.”

An Evening with Roy Curless.....A Historical Look at the Fortuna Rodeo

On July 12, 2012 the Fortuna Historical Commission presented the first program in the new “Conversations at the Depot” series. A warm-hearted and enthusiastic crowd of about fifty people gathered at the Fortuna Depot Museum for “An Evening with Roy Curless and Friends: A Historical Look at the Fortuna Rodeo and Other Tall Tales.” Roy Curless, Ed Tanferani and Fortuna Rodeo Association Board of Directors president Shannon McWhorter shared reminiscences of their experiences with the Fortuna Rodeo, which celebrated its 91st year in summer 2012.

Roy Curless says he has missed only two Fortuna Rodeos in his lifetime, though he admits that he only remembers his first rodeo through having been told about it by his mother. Mr. Curless has served on the Fortuna Rodeo Association Board of Directors for 54 years, 29 of those years as board president. Roy and wife Laurada were grand marshals of the Fortuna Rodeo Parade in 2011. Fellow storyteller Ed Tanferani served on the Rodeo board for 32 years, and stepped down last year.
